Artist Bio:
Paula is an artist who works in the medium of photography as her base along with hand pulled printmaking (primarily intaglio and monotypes), acrylic, encaustic, and mixed media collage work. She has a B.A. in Psychology from San Diego State University and in May 2007, completed a second Bachelor’s Degree in Art Studio from the University of New Mexico. Her life’s journey has taken her from her birthplace in Hawaii to residing for twenty years in California and finally ending up in New Mexico in 1994.
Artist Statement:
There are two two places that she calls home; where she grew up on the island of Moloka’i (in Hawaii) and New Mexico. Most of her imagery represents reflections and glimpses of these two worlds. She to often refers to them as her parallel universes.
An eclectic person, much of her work reflects her personal philosophy and eclectic approach to life. She enjoys looking at things from different perspectives. Often in her photographic work, she likes getting in as close as possible to the subject matter; noticing all the details that the eye can see. The same subject matter viewed from as many perspectives as possible can render entirely different interpretations. Sometimes a particular viewpoint of an ordinary object becomes an abstraction in itself; to the point of not being recognizable. This kind of examination process offers an extraordinary variety of life’s vignettes. It is this sense of acuity that Paula fully seeks and embraces and is always in search of in many of her images. It’s about seeing beauty, transcendence and mystery in everyday things.
Paula also has a high affinity for textural and organic images which may explain her attraction to such techniques as Polaroid manipulations, hand pulled prints and working in encaustic medium. These are very textural and tactile processes.
Her art endeavors are all truly personal. Throughout her work, Paula indulges in and enjoys the spirit of play and exploration.
